A mature/shed pollen grain is generally 2-celled (vegetative cell + generative cell); in some species it is 3-celled because the generative cell has already divided.

The pollen grain represents the male gametophyte. It develops from a microspore inside the anther's microsporangium. Its wall has two layers — the tough, sporopollenin-coated exine (with germ pores) and the inner, cellulosic intine.

When the pollen grain matures, its nucleus divides mitotically (unequal division) to produce two cells:

  • Vegetative cell: larger, with abundant food reserves and an irregular nucleus; it later forms the pollen tube.
  • Generative cell: small, spindle-shaped, floats in the cytoplasm of the vegetative cell. …
