Copper loss (windings) and eddy-current loss (core) are minimised by low-resistance windings and a laminated core respectively.

A real transformer has small energy losses from several sources; two important ones:

1. Copper loss (resistive/I2RI^2R loss): The primary and secondary windings have some resistance, so current flowing through them dissipates energy as heat (P=I2RP = I^2R). Minimised by winding the coils with thick, low-resistance copper wire.
