A step-up transformer raises AC voltage (and lowers current); its chief use is to boost voltage for efficient long-distance power transmission with minimal line loss.

A step-up transformer has more turns in the secondary coil than in the primary (Ns>NpN_s > N_p), so the secondary voltage is greater than the primary voltage:

VsVp=NsNp>1.\frac{V_s}{V_p} = \frac{N_s}{N_p} > 1.

Since (for an ideal transformer) power is conserved, VpIp=VsIsV_pI_p = V_sI_s, so as the voltage steps up the current steps down.
