A transformer works on mutual induction; its losses are copper, iron (hysteresis + eddy-current), flux-leakage and humming losses.

Working principle. A transformer works on the principle of mutual induction. When an alternating voltage is applied to the primary coil, the alternating current produces a continuously changing magnetic flux in the soft-iron core. This changing flux links the secondary coil and, by Faraday's law, induces an alternating emf in it:

EsEp=NsNp.\frac{E_s}{E_p} = \frac{N_s}{N_p}.

A step-up transformer has Ns>NpN_s>N_p; a step-down has Ns<NpN_s<N_p.
