In a semiconductor the valence and conduction bands are separated by only a small energy gap, so a few electrons can thermally hop across at room temperature.

In the band theory of solids, the highest energy band that is normally filled with electrons is the valence band, and the next higher (normally empty) band is the conduction band. Materials are classified by the size of the energy gap EgE_g between these bands:
