The energy gap is the forbidden energy region between the valence and conduction bands; its size (≈0, ≈1 eV, or >3 eV) determines whether a material is a conductor, semiconductor, or insulator.

In the band theory of solids, electrons occupy the valence band (bound, outermost occupied energy levels) and can conduct electricity only if they reach the conduction band (higher, largely empty energy levels where electrons move freely). The energy gap (or forbidden gap), EgE_g, is the range of energies between the top of the valence band and the bottom of the conduction band, in which no electron states exist.
