The size of the energy gap between the valence and conduction bands decides conductor vs insulator vs semiconductor.

In the band theory of solids, materials are classified by the energy gap EgE_g between the (filled) valence band and the (empty) conduction band:

  • Conductors: there is no forbidden energy gap — the valence and conduction bands overlap, so electrons are always freely available for conduction even at very low temperatures.
  • Insulators: the forbidden gap is very large (typically Eg≳3E_g \gtrsim 3 eV, e.g. diamond ∼5.4\sim 5.4 eV). The valence band is completely full and the conduction band is completely empty, and thermal energy at ordinary temperatures is nowhere near enough to excite electrons across such a large gap, so essentially no conduction occurs. …
