Whittaker's five kingdom system (1969) classifies organisms using five criteria together: cell structure, body organisation, mode of nutrition, reproduction, and phylogenetic relationships.

This is covered at the start of the Biological Classification chapter, explaining how organisms are grouped into Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.

The five criteria used by Whittaker:

  1. Cell structure — whether the organism's cells are prokaryotic (no true nucleus, e.g., Monera) or eukaryotic (has a true, membrane-bound nucleus, e.g., Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia).
  2. Body organisation (thallus organisation) — the level of organisation of the body, ranging from unicellular to colonial to complex, differentiated multicellular forms.
  3. Mode of nutrition — whether the organism is autotrophic (makes its own food, e.g., plants via photosynthesis) or heterotrophic (depends on other organisms for food, either as saprophytes/absorptive like fungi, or ingestive like animals).
  4. Mode of reproduction — the different ways organisms reproduce, whether asexually or sexually, and the pattern of their life cycles.
  5. Phylogenetic relationships — the evolutionary relationships among different groups of organisms, i.e., how closely or distantly related they are through common ancestry.

Based on these five criteria together, Whittaker classified all living organisms into five kingdoms: Monera (prokaryotes), Protista (unicellular eukaryotes), Fungi (heterotrophic, absorptive, mostly multicellular with chitin cell walls), Plantae (multicellular, autotrophic), and Animalia (multicellular, heterotrophic, ingestive).
