Electrophiles are electron-pair acceptors (positively charged or electron-deficient); nucleophiles are electron-pair donors (negatively charged or electron-rich).

Electrophiles ('electron-loving' species) are atoms, ions, or molecules that are electron-deficient (or bear a positive charge) and therefore seek out and accept a pair of electrons from another species to form a new covalent bond. They are Lewis acids.

Examples: H⁺ (proton), NO2⁺ (nitronium ion), R⁺ (carbocations), BF3, AlCl3.

Nucleophiles ('nucleus-loving' species) are atoms, ions, or molecules that are electron-rich (have a lone pair or negative charge) and donate a pair of electrons to an electrophilic centre to form a new covalent bond. They are Lewis bases.

Examples: OH⁻ (hydroxide), CN⁻ (cyanide), NH3, H2O, Cl⁻.
