Electrophiles are electron-deficient species that accept an electron pair to form a bond; nucleophiles are electron-rich species that donate an electron pair to form a bond.

Electrophile (literally 'electron-loving'): An electron-deficient atom, ion, or molecule that is attracted to a region of high electron density and forms a new covalent bond by accepting a pair of electrons from another species. Electrophiles can be positively charged ions or neutral molecules with an incomplete octet. Examples: H+H^+, NO2+NO_2^+ (nitronium ion), carbocations like CH3+CH_3^+, and neutral Lewis acids such as BF3BF_3, AlCl3AlCl_3.
