The net work done in a cyclic process equals the area enclosed by the loop on the P-V diagram; for this rectangular cycle that area is P x V.

The cycle goes A(P,V) -> B(2P,V) -> C(2P,2V) -> D(P,2V) -> A(P,V).

Work done during each leg (W = integral of P dV, only non-zero when V changes):

  • A to B: V constant (isochoric), W_AB = 0
  • B to C: V increases from V to 2V at constant P = 2P, W_BC = 2P x (2V - V) = 2PV (positive, gas expands, does work)
  • C to D: V constant (isochoric), W_CD = 0
  • D to A: V decreases from 2V to V at constant P = P, W_DA = P x (V - 2V) = -PV (negative, work done ON the gas) …
