Isothermal = constant T; Isobaric = constant P; Adiabatic = no heat exchange (Q = 0).

Thermodynamic processes are often classified by which state variable, or which type of energy exchange, is held fixed:

  1. Isothermal process: A process in which the temperature (T) of the system remains constant throughout. For an ideal gas, since PV = nRT, this means PV stays constant during the process (Boyle's-law-type behaviour). To keep T constant while the gas expands or is compressed, heat must be allowed to flow slowly into or out of the system, in contact with a large heat reservoir.
  2. Isobaric process: A process that occurs at constant pressure (P). In this case, if the gas's volume changes, V/T stays constant. Heating a gas in a container fitted with a freely movable piston (so that pressure automatically stays equal to the constant external/atmospheric pressure) is a physical example of an isobaric process. …
