The informal sector's defining problem is that its workers are unregulated and unprotected — low, irregular pay, no job security, and no social security.

Problems faced by workers in the informal (unorganised) sector:

  1. Low and irregular wages / no job security — informal workers (casual labourers, workers in small unregistered units, street vendors, domestic workers) are typically paid daily or piece-rate wages, often below subsistence levels, with no guarantee of continued work and no protection against arbitrary dismissal.

  2. No legal/social security protection — unlike organised-sector employees, informal workers generally receive no provident fund, pension, paid leave, maternity benefit, or health/accident insurance, leaving them and their families vulnerable in old age, sickness or injury.

  3. Poor and unsafe working conditions — many informal units operate with long working hours, no safety regulations, inadequate ventilation/sanitation, and higher exposure to occupational hazards, with little recourse for the worker if injured.
