AIDS is caused by HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, a retrovirus that carries an RNA genome and uses reverse transcriptase to make a DNA copy which integrates into the host genome.

The causative organism — HIV

The pathogen responsible for the disease described (AIDS) is the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV is a retrovirus — its genetic material is single-stranded RNA, and it carries the enzyme reverse transcriptase, which synthesizes a complementary DNA (cDNA) copy from its RNA genome once inside a host cell. This viral DNA then integrates into the host cell's chromosomal DNA, from where new virus particles are eventually produced, ultimately destroying the host cell and progressively depleting the immune cell population.
