HIV selectively targets and progressively destroys helper T-lymphocytes (CD4+ T cells), the central coordinating cells of the adaptive immune system, and their depletion is what causes the profound immunosuppression seen in AIDS.

Cells affected by HIV

HIV specifically infects the helper T-lymphocytes (TH cells) of the human body — these cells carry a surface receptor called CD4, which HIV's envelope glycoprotein (gp120) binds to in order to gain entry into the cell (hence these cells are also called CD4+ T cells).

Once inside a helper T-cell, HIV (using reverse transcriptase) integrates its viral DNA into the host cell's genome and begins replicating, eventually producing large numbers of new virus particles that are released by rupturing (lysing) the host T-cell, and go on to infect other helper T-cells.
