Ringworm is a superficial fungal infection of keratinized tissues caused primarily by dermatophytes like Trichophyton and Microsporum; symptoms include circular, scaly lesions with raised edges and intense itching.

Ringworm, despite its misleading name, has nothing to do with worms. The term comes from the characteristic ring-shaped rash it produces. The infection is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, which have a special ability: they can digest keratin, the protein that makes up our skin, hair, and nails. This is why ringworm infections are always superficial, confined to the outermost layers of the body.

The fungi thrive in warm, moist environments and spread easily through direct contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated objects like towels and combs. Understanding which genera cause the disease helps in diagnosis and treatment.

Causative Genera

The two most common fungal genera responsible for ringworm are:

  1. Trichophyton

This is the most frequent culprit worldwide. Species like Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes infect skin, nails, and hair. They're responsible for athlete's foot, jock itch, and scalp ringworm.

  2. Microsporum

This genus primarily affects the scalp and skin. Microsporum canis, often transmitted from cats and dogs, is a common species. It causes the classic ring-shaped lesions on exposed skin.

Note

A third genus, Epidermophyton, also causes ringworm but is less common. It typically infects skin and nails but not hair.

Clinical Symptoms

Ringworm presents with distinctive features that make it recognizable:

  1. Circular, scaly patches with raised borders

The hallmark of ringworm is the ring-shaped lesion. The center often appears clearer or heals while the infection spreads outward, creating a red, raised, scaly border. This gives the appearance of a ring or circle on the skin.

  2. Intense itching (pruritus) …
