Triple fusion is the second fertilisation event unique to flowering plants, in which a male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei of the central cell to form a triploid nucleus that goes on to nourish the developing embryo as endosperm.

Definition

Triple fusion is a process characteristic of angiosperm fertilisation (double fertilisation), in which one of the two male gametes delivered by the pollen tube fuses with the two haploid polar nuclei present in the central cell of the embryo sac (or with the diploid secondary nucleus that is sometimes already formed by the earlier fusion of the two polar nuclei with each other) — since three haploid nuclei are involved in this fusion event overall (1 male gamete + 2 polar nuclei), it is termed "triple fusion."
