Double fertilization is a defining feature of angiosperms in which one male gamete fuses with the egg (syngamy) and the other fuses with the two polar nuclei (triple fusion), both within the embryo sac.

After pollination, the pollen tube grows through the style and enters the ovule (commonly through the micropyle — porogamy), usually penetrating one of the synergids, where it releases its two non-motile male gametes into the cytoplasm of the embryo sac. Two fusion events then occur simultaneously:

  1. Syngamy — one male gamete (n) fuses with the egg cell (n) to form a diploid (2n) zygote, which later develops into the embryo.
  2. Triple fusion — the other male gamete (n) migrates to the central cell and fuses with the two polar nuclei (or the diploid secondary nucleus formed by their prior fusion) to form a triploid (3n) primary endosperm nucleus (PEN), which develops into the nutritive endosperm tissue that nourishes the developing embryo. …
