Double fertilization, unique to angiosperms, involves two fusion events inside the embryo sac: syngamy, in which one male gamete fuses with the egg cell (n + n) to form the diploid zygote that develops into the embryo, and triple fusion, in which the second male gamete fuses with the two polar nuclei (n + n + n) to form the triploid primary endosperm nucleus (PEN), which develops into the nutritive endosperm. Its biological significance lies in coordinating nutrient supply with successful fertilization — the energy- and resource-rich endosperm is formed only after fertilization has actually taken place, avoiding wasteful production of nutritive tissue in unfertilized ovules, and ensuring the developing embryo has a ready food reserve.
