An electric dipole in a uniform field experiences no net force (the forces on its two charges are equal and opposite) but does experience a net torque, found by taking moments of those two forces about the dipole's centre: τ=pEsin⁡θ\tau=pE\sin\theta.

Set-up

Consider a dipole of charges +q+q and −q-q separated by 2a2a, dipole moment p⃗=q(2a)p^\vec p=q(2a)\hat p (from −q-q to +q+q), in a uniform external field E⃗\vec E making angle θ\theta with p⃗\vec p.

Forces on the charges

Force on +q+q: F⃗+=qE⃗\vec F_+=q\vec E (along E⃗\vec E). Force on −q-q: F⃗−=−qE⃗\vec F_-=-q\vec E (opposite). These are equal and opposite, so net force is zero:

F⃗++F⃗−=0\vec F_++\vec F_- = 0

Net torque
