The coelom's presence and lining are governed entirely by the mesoderm — the third germ layer found only in triploblastic animals — with its degree of development separating coelomates, pseudocoelomates and acoelomates.

The coelom, the cavity lying between the body wall and the gut wall, is closely tied to the number of germ layers an animal develops from.

  • Diploblastic animals, built from only ectoderm and endoderm with a non-cellular mesoglea between them, do not enter into this coelom classification at all, since there is no true mesoderm to line any cavity.
  • In triploblastic animals, a genuine mesoderm forms between the ectoderm and endoderm, and it is precisely this mesoderm that determines the coelom condition:
    • Coelomates have a true body cavity that is fully lined by mesoderm.
    • Pseudocoelomates have a body cavity, but the mesoderm forms only scattered pouches between the ectoderm and endoderm rather than a continuous lining, giving a pseudocoelom.
    • Acoelomates develop no body cavity at all between the gut and the body wall, even though they are triploblastic. …
