F1 particles are the part of ATP synthase where ATP itself is actually made.

ATP synthase, also called complex V of the electron transport system, is built from two major components working together: F0, an integral membrane protein complex that forms a channel through which protons cross the inner mitochondrial membrane, and F1, a peripheral membrane protein complex projecting into the matrix.

F1 is where the actual chemistry of ATP formation happens — it contains the catalytic site for synthesising ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate. This synthesis is powered by the flow of protons through the F0 channel, driven down the electrochemical gradient built up by the electron transport system; for every ATP molecule produced, four hydrogen ions pass through F0. …
