A homologous series is a family with the same functional group whose successive

members differ by one −CH2−-\text{CH}_2- unit. Starting from each given compound, the first

five members are obtained by adding −CH2−-\text{CH}_2- groups (increasing the carbon count

by one each time), keeping the functional group unchanged.

The rule is simple: keep the functional group, and lengthen the carbon chain by one

−CH2−-\text{CH}_2- at each step. The compound given is the first member; the next four

follow.

(a) H—COOH — carboxylic acid series (CnH2nO2C_nH_{2n}O_2)

  1. Methanoic acid — HCOOH\text{HCOOH}
  2. Ethanoic acid — CH3COOH\text{CH}_3\text{COOH}
  3. Propanoic acid — CH3CH2COOH\text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{COOH}
  4. Butanoic acid — CH3CH2CH2COOH\text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{COOH}
  5. Pentanoic acid — CH3CH2CH2CH2COOH\text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{COOH}

(b) CH₃COCH₃ — ketone series (CnH2nOC_nH_{2n}O)

  1. Propanone — CH3COCH3\text{CH}_3\text{COCH}_3
  2. Butanone — CH3COCH2CH3\text{CH}_3\text{COCH}_2\text{CH}_3
  3. Pentan-2-one — CH3COCH2CH2CH3\text{CH}_3\text{COCH}_2\text{CH}_2\text{CH}_3
  4. Hexan-2-one — CH3CO(CH2)3CH3\text{CH}_3\text{CO(CH}_2)_3\text{CH}_3
  5. Heptan-2-one — CH3CO(CH2)4CH3\text{CH}_3\text{CO(CH}_2)_4\text{CH}_3

(c) H—CH=CH₂ — alkene series (CnH2nC_nH_{2n})

  1. Ethene — CH2=CH2\text{CH}_2=\text{CH}_2
  2. Propene — CH3CH=CH2\text{CH}_3\text{CH}=\text{CH}_2
  3. But-1-ene — CH3CH2CH=CH2\text{CH}_3\text{CH}_2\text{CH}=\text{CH}_2 …
