C = a + bY: consumption rises with income, but less than proportionately, because part of each extra rupee of income is saved; a schedule and a straight upward-sloping line (starting above the origin) illustrate this.

Consumption function expresses the functional relationship between the level of consumption expenditure (C) and the level of income (Y) of a household/economy, given by:

C = a + bY

where:

  • a = autonomous consumption — the minimum consumption that occurs even when income (Y) is zero (financed by past savings/borrowing), so a > 0.
  • b = Marginal Propensity to Consume (MPC) = ΔC/ΔY, the fraction of each additional rupee of income that is spent on consumption (0 < b < 1).
