Cannabinoids are obtained from the Cannabis sativa plant (hemp); the two main cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol, and they primarily affect the cardiovascular system and central nervous system.

The source plant is Cannabis sativa, commonly known as hemp or marijuana. This flowering plant has been used for centuries, both for its fibre and for its psychoactive properties. The active chemical compounds it produces — the cannabinoids — are concentrated in the resin of the plant, particularly in the flowering tops and leaves.

The two most significant cannabinoids are:

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): This is the principal psychoactive compound responsible for the "high" associated with cannabis use. It binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain and alters neurotransmitter release.
  • Cannabidiol: While less psychoactive than THC, this compound also has biological effects and is present in varying concentrations depending on the plant strain.

When someone consumes cannabis — whether by smoking, ingesting, or other means — these cannabinoids enter the bloodstream and are distributed throughout the body. The organs and systems most affected are the cardiovascular system and the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord).

In the cardiovascular system, cannabinoids cause an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. The blood vessels may dilate, leading to reddening of the eyes — a classic visible sign of cannabis use. For individuals with pre-existing heart conditions, this cardiovascular stress can pose serious risks. …
