Chikungunya is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, the same vector responsible for dengue and Zika.

Understanding how diseases spread is central to public health, and vector-borne diseases—those transmitted by living organisms—form a major category. Chikungunya is one such viral infection, and identifying its vector tells us everything about how outbreaks occur and how we might control them.

The disease is caused by the chikungunya virus, which belongs to the alphavirus genus. It cannot spread directly from person to person through casual contact or air. Instead, it requires an intermediary—a vector—to carry the pathogen from an infected individual to a healthy one. This is where the Aedes mosquito comes in.

Two species are primarily responsible: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. These are the same mosquitoes that transmit dengue fever, yellow fever, and Zika virus, making them among the most medically important insects in tropical and subtropical regions. Aedes aegypti is particularly well-adapted to urban environments, breeding in small collections of stagnant water—flower pots, discarded tyres, water storage containers—often found around human habitations. Aedes albopictus, sometimes called the Asian tiger mosquito, is more adaptable to rural and peri-urban settings.

Note

Unlike the Anopheles mosquito (which transmits malaria and bites mainly at night), Aedes mosquitoes are day-biters, with peak activity in the early morning and late afternoon. This behavioural difference is crucial for prevention strategies.

The transmission cycle is straightforward. When an Aedes mosquito bites a person infected with chikungunya, it ingests the virus along with the blood meal. The virus then replicates inside the mosquito over several days. Once the mosquito becomes infective, it can transmit the virus to every subsequent person it bites. The name "chikungunya" itself comes from a word in the Kimakonde language meaning "to become contorted," referring to the severe joint pain that causes sufferers to stoop or bend. …
