An algal bloom is the rapid excessive growth of algae (especially cyanobacteria) in water bodies, while a red tide is the reddening of the sea caused by explosive multiplication of toxic red dinoflagellates such as Gonyaulax.

Algal bloom

  • Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are found in freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats and often occur in polluted water bodies.
  • When conditions are favourable (especially in nutrient-rich, polluted water), these algae multiply rapidly and excessively, increasing the colour of the water. This sudden, dense growth is called an algal bloom.
  • Blooms can deteriorate water quality and harm aquatic life.

Red tides

  • Some dinoflagellates (Kingdom Protista) are red in colour.
  • Very often, red dinoflagellates such as Gonyaulax undergo such rapid multiplication that they make the sea appear red — a condition called a red tide. …
