Sky waves bounce off the ionosphere to reach distant points (HF band); space waves travel line-of-sight directly between antennas (VHF/UHF and above), range limited by Earth's curvature.

Sky-wave propagation: Radio waves in the high-frequency (HF) range, roughly 2–40 MHz, transmitted from the ground antenna at an angle towards the sky, are reflected back towards the Earth by the ionosphere (the ionized upper layers of the atmosphere, D/E/F layers, which act like a reflecting/refracting mirror for waves below a critical frequency). The wave may undergo multiple reflections between the ionosphere and the Earth's surface, allowing communication over very long distances (thousands of km), well beyond line-of-sight, without needing repeaters. This is how shortwave/amateur radio and some long-distance broadcast communication works. Frequencies above about 40 MHz (the critical frequency of the ionosphere) are not reflected and simply pass through into space.
