Algal bloom
- Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are found in freshwater, marine and terrestrial habitats and often occur in polluted water bodies.
- When conditions are favourable (especially in nutrient-rich, polluted water), these algae multiply rapidly and excessively, increasing the colour of the water. This sudden, dense growth is called an algal bloom.
- Blooms can deteriorate water quality and harm aquatic life.
Red tides
- Some dinoflagellates (Kingdom Protista) are red in colour.
