Antigens are foreign molecules that trigger an immune response, while antibodies are Y-shaped proteins produced by the body to neutralize specific antigens. ELISA and pregnancy test kits are two common diagnostic tools based on antigen-antibody interactions.

The immune system operates on a fundamental principle of recognition: distinguishing "self" from "non-self." This is where antigens and antibodies come into play, forming the cornerstone of our body's defense mechanism and modern medical diagnostics.

An antigen is any foreign substance—typically a protein or polysaccharide—that enters the body and provokes an immune response. The term itself hints at its function: it is an "antibody generator." These molecules are usually found on the surface of pathogens like bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, but can also be present on pollen grains, transplanted tissues, or even cancer cells. What makes a molecule antigenic is its ability to be recognized as foreign by the immune system, specifically by lymphocytes.

An antibody, also called an immunoglobulin, is a specialized Y-shaped protein produced by B-lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) in response to a specific antigen. Each antibody is highly specific—it binds to only one particular antigen, much like a lock and key. This binding neutralizes the antigen directly or marks it for destruction by other immune cells. Antibodies circulate in blood and lymph, providing humoral immunity.

The beauty of the antigen-antibody interaction lies in its specificity. When an antigen enters the body, B-cells recognize it and differentiate into plasma cells that secrete millions of identical antibodies tailored to that exact antigen. Some B-cells become memory cells, ensuring a faster response if the same antigen appears again—the basis of immunological memory and vaccination.

Important

The antigen-antibody reaction is highly specific and forms the basis of immunological memory. This specificity is exploited in diagnostic tests to detect the presence of particular antigens or antibodies in body fluids.

This exquisite specificity has been harnessed for medical diagnostics. Two widely used diagnostic kits based on antigen-antibody interactions are: …
