Transgenic animals are organisms whose DNA has been altered to include and express a foreign gene, allowing them to be utilised in diverse fields such as understanding gene function, modelling human diseases, producing valuable biological products, and testing vaccine and chemical safety.

Genetic engineering, at its core, involves manipulating an organism's genetic material to introduce new traits or modify existing ones. While we often hear about its applications in bacteria, such as producing human insulin, the principles extend to more complex organisms. When we apply these techniques to animals, we create what are known as transgenic animals. These are not just animals with a random genetic change; they are specifically engineered to carry and express a gene from another species, or an altered gene from their own species, for a particular purpose.

A transgenic animal is defined as an animal that has had its DNA manipulated to possess and express an extra, foreign gene. This manipulation typically involves introducing a gene from a different species into the animal's genome, which then gets incorporated into its DNA and is passed on to subsequent generations. The goal is often to study the function of this introduced gene, or to enable the animal to produce a specific product or exhibit a particular trait.

The creation of transgenic animals has opened up numerous avenues for research and application, significantly impacting fields from medicine to agriculture. Here are four key areas where they are extensively utilised:

  • Study of Normal Physiology and Development: Transgenic animals serve as invaluable models for understanding how genes are regulated and how they influence the normal functions of the body and its developmental processes. By introducing a specific gene and observing its expression or lack thereof, scientists can decipher its role in complex biological pathways. For instance, transgenic animals have been designed to study the intricate factors involved in growth, such as insulin-like growth factor, providing insights into how these genes contribute to an organism's overall development and health. This allows researchers to pinpoint the exact function of individual genes within a living system.

  • Study of Disease: One of the most significant applications of transgenic animals is in modelling human diseases. These animals are engineered to carry genes that predispose them to specific conditions, mimicking human diseases like cancer, cystic fibrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Alzheimer's. By studying these animal models, researchers can gain a deeper understanding of how genes contribute to the development and progression of these diseases. More importantly, they provide a platform for testing new drugs and therapies in a living system before human trials, accelerating the development of effective treatments. …
