Eutrophication is the process by which a water body becomes progressively enriched with minerals and nutrients, particularly nitrates and phosphates (from sewage, detergents and agricultural run-off/fertilizers). This nutrient enrichment triggers explosive growth of phytoplankton, algae (algal blooms) and free-floating weeds such as water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes, called the 'terror of Bengal'). Dense mats block sunlight penetration and, when the excess biomass dies and is decomposed by bacteria, dissolved oxygen in the water is depleted, killing fish and other aquatic life.
