Biogenesis (Louis Pasteur) holds that living organisms can only arise from pre-existing living organisms, disproving spontaneous generation.

Before Louis Pasteur's work, many believed in spontaneous generation (abiogenesis) - the idea that living organisms could arise suddenly from non-living matter (e.g., that mice arose from dirty clothes and wheat, or maggots from decaying meat). Pasteur disproved this through his famous swan-neck flask experiment: he boiled nutrient broth in flasks with long S-shaped (swan) necks that allowed air in but trapped dust and microorganisms in the curve of the neck, preventing them from reaching the broth. The broth remained sterile and showed no microbial growth as long as the neck stayed intact, but as soon as the neck was broken or tilted so that trapped dust/microbes reached the broth, microbial growth appeared rapidly.
