The close resemblance of early vertebrate embryos and their shared embryonic structures show common ancestry — the embryological evidence of evolution.

Embryology (the study of embryonic development) provides strong evidence for organic evolution:

  1. Similarity of early embryos: The early embryos of all vertebrates — fish, amphibian, reptile, bird and mammal — look remarkably alike. They all possess a notochord, paired pharyngeal (gill) slits, a two-chambered heart plan, and a post-anal tail at some stage. Only in later development do they diverge to acquire their adult, species-specific features. Karl Ernst von Baer noted that general characters appear earlier in development and specialised characters later.

  2. Common embryonic structures that are transient: For example, pharyngeal (gill) clefts appear in the embryos of terrestrial vertebrates (including humans) even though gills never function there — a sign of aquatic (fish-like) ancestry. The aortic arches, pronephric kidney, etc., also recall ancestral condition.
