Griffith's experiment first demonstrated that a hereditary 'transforming principle' passes from dead virulent bacteria to living non-virulent bacteria; this principle was later shown to be DNA.

Frederick Griffith (1928) worked with two strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae in mice: the S (Smooth) strain, which has a polysaccharide (mucous) coat, is virulent and kills the mouse; and the R (Rough) strain, which lacks the coat, is non-virulent and does not kill the mouse.
