DNA fingerprinting identifies individuals from the highly polymorphic repetitive DNA (VNTRs), and is used in forensics, paternity disputes and population studies.

DNA fingerprinting is a technique that detects differences in specific regions of DNA, called repetitive or satellite DNA, particularly VNTRs (Variable Number of Tandem Repeats). Because the number of these repeats varies greatly from person to person, the resulting pattern (banding profile) is unique to each individual (except identical twins).
