Mendel's law of segregation states that the two factors (alleles) of a gene, present together in a diploid individual, separate cleanly during gamete formation so each gamete gets only one allele.

In a diploid organism, every gene is present as a pair of alleles, one inherited from each parent (e.g. a plant may carry Tt for height, with T for tall and t for dwarf). Mendel's law of segregation, also called the law of purity of gametes, states that during the formation of gametes (meiosis), the two alleles of a gene separate from each other and pass into different gametes - they never blend or mix, and each gamete remains "pure," carrying only a single allele for that gene. This physically corresponds to the separation of homologous chromosomes (which carry the two alleles) at anaphase I of meiosis.
