Genotype is the underlying genetic makeup of an organism, whereas phenotype is the outwardly visible/expressed trait that the genotype (together with the environment) produces.

FeatureGenotypePhenotype
DefinitionThe genetic constitution of an organism - the specific combination of alleles it carries for a gene/trait (e.g. TT, Tt, or tt)The observable/expressed characteristic of the organism resulting from its genotype (e.g. tall or dwarf plant)
NatureInternal, molecular - cannot usually be seen directly, only inferred (e.g. by test cross or genetic testing)External, visible/measurable - can be directly observed or measured
Determined byInherited alleles from the parents, fixed at fertilisationGenotype expression, often modified/influenced by environmental factors (e.g. nutrition, temperature, light)
ExampleA pea plant with genotype Tt for heightThe same plant appearing tall, because T (tall) is dominant over t (dwarf)
RelationshipTwo different genotypes can sometimes give the same phenotype (e.g. TT and Tt both look tall, since T is dominant)The same phenotype can therefore correspond to more than one genotype
