Haemophilia is a sex-linked (X-linked) recessive blood-clotting disorder, often called the 'bleeder's disease'.

Haemophilia is caused by a recessive mutant allele located on the X chromosome, which fails to produce a functional clotting factor (Factor VIII in Haemophilia A, or Factor IX in Haemophilia B). As a result, in an affected person even a minor cut does not stop bleeding easily, since the blood clotting cascade cannot proceed normally.
