Colour blindness is a sex-linked (X-linked) recessive disorder causing an inability to distinguish red and green colours, more common in males.

Colour blindness (most commonly red-green colour blindness) results from a defect in one or more types of cone cells in the retina that are responsible for perceiving colour, caused by a recessive mutant allele carried on the X chromosome. Since males have only one X chromosome (XY), a single copy of the mutant allele (XcY) is enough to make them colour-blind (hemizygous condition). Females, having two X chromosomes (XX), need the mutant allele on both X chromosomes (XcXc) to be colour-blind; a female with one normal and one mutant allele (XXc) is an unaffected carrier, who can pass the trait on to her sons - about half of whom …
