Birds use ZW-ZZ sex determination (female heterogametic); honeybees use haplodiploidy (diploid females, haploid males from unfertilized eggs).

Sex determination in birds (ZW-ZZ type):

  • In birds, the female carries two different sex chromosomes and is heterogametic - her genotype is ZW.
  • The male carries two similar sex chromosomes and is homogametic - genotype ZZ.
  • The female produces two kinds of eggs (Z-bearing and W-bearing), while all sperm carry Z. Hence the egg (female gamete) determines the sex of the offspring: Z egg + Z sperm = ZZ (male); W egg + Z sperm = ZW (female). This is the reverse of the human XX-XY system.

Sex determination in honeybees (haplodiploidy):

  • Honeybees have no special sex chromosomes; sex depends on the number of chromosome sets (ploidy).
  • A fertilized egg is diploid (2n) and develops into a female - a fertile queen or a sterile worker (the difference between queen and worker being decided by diet, e.g. royal jelly). …
