IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is an Assisted Reproductive Technology in which fertilisation of the ovum by sperm is carried out outside the human body, in a laboratory dish, and the resulting embryo is then transferred into the woman's reproductive tract.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) literally means 'fertilisation in glass' - it is one of the major Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) used to help couples experiencing infertility.

Procedure (as taught in NCERT):

  1. Ova from the wife/donor (after hormonal stimulation of the ovaries to induce follicular development) and sperm from the husband/donor are collected.
  2. The ova and sperm are brought together in the laboratory (in vitro, outside the body) to allow fertilisation to occur under controlled conditions.
  3. The resulting zygote/early embryo (up to the 8-blastomere stage) can then either be:
