Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic technique based on analysis of amniotic fluid to detect the sex and genetic/chromosomal abnormalities of the foetus, but it is legally banned in India for sex-determination purposes because of its misuse leading to female foeticide.

Amniocentesis is a foetal-sex determination and prenatal-diagnostic technique in which a small amount of the amniotic fluid surrounding the developing foetus (which contains foetal cells and chemicals) is withdrawn through a needle inserted into the amniotic sac, and analysed. Because it is based on the differential expression of sex chromosomes/sex-linked genes and can also reveal chromosomal abnormalities (like Down's syndrome), it was originally used as a genetic amniocentesis for detecting foetal abnormalities.
