Amniocentesis is a prenatal test on amniotic fluid that can reveal, among other things, the sex of the foetus; it is legally banned for that purpose in India because of its misuse for female foeticide.

What is amniocentesis? It is a foetal genetic diagnostic technique in which a small sample of the amniotic fluid surrounding the developing foetus (which contains foetal cells and various chemical substances) is withdrawn by a fine needle and analysed. Because of chromosomal-based physiological/biochemical differences between male and female foetuses, this test is capable of revealing the sex of the foetus, in addition to detecting certain foetal genetic and chromosomal abnormalities.
