Acidified K2Cr2O7K_2Cr_2O_7 oxidises ethanol first to acetaldehyde and, on continued oxidation, to acetic acid, with the orange dichromate colour turning green.

Acidified potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7/H+K_2Cr_2O_7/H^+) is a strong oxidising agent that acts on primary alcohols in two successive stages:

Step 1 — Oxidation to aldehyde:

CH3CH2OH→H+K2Cr2O7CH3CHOCH_3CH_2OH \xrightarrow[H^+]{K_2Cr_2O_7} CH_3CHO

(If the aldehyde is distilled off as soon as it forms, e.g. using a mild oxidant like pyridinium chlorochromate industrially, the reaction can be stopped at this stage; with excess acidified K2Cr2O7K_2Cr_2O_7 under normal reflux conditions, oxidation proceeds further.)

Step 2 — Further oxidation to carboxylic acid:

CH3CHO→H+K2Cr2O7CH3COOHCH_3CHO \xrightarrow[H^+]{K_2Cr_2O_7} CH_3COOH

Overall: CH3CH2OH→H+K2Cr2O7CH3COOHCH_3CH_2OH \xrightarrow[H^+]{K_2Cr_2O_7} CH_3COOH (acetic acid).
