Rosenmund's reduction converts an acid chloride to the corresponding aldehyde using H2 gas with a partially deactivated (poisoned) palladium catalyst.

An acyl chloride (RCOCl), prepared from a carboxylic acid using SOCl2 or PCl5, is treated with hydrogen gas in the presence of palladium supported on barium sulphate (Pd/BaSO4), typically in boiling xylene. The BaSO4 partially poisons (deactivates) the Pd catalyst, so that hydrogenation stops at the aldehyde stage rather than proceeding all the way to the primary alcohol:

R-COCl + H2 --Pd/BaSO4, xylene--> R-CHO + HCl
