Tollens' test (or Fehling's test) distinguishes acetaldehyde from acetone: the aldehyde gives a positive result and the ketone does not.

Acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) is an aldehyde, and aldehydes are good reducing agents because of the -CHO group. Acetone (CH3COCH3) is a ketone and, lacking an H atom directly on the carbonyl carbon, is not oxidised as easily and does not reduce mild oxidising agents.

Tollens' test: Warm the compound with Tollens' reagent (ammoniacal AgNO3 solution). Acetaldehyde reduces Ag+ to metallic silver, which deposits as a bright silver mirror on the walls of the test tube (the aldehyde itself is oxidised to acetate). Acetone gives no silver mirror - no visible reaction occurs.

CH3CHO + 2[Ag(NH3)2]+ + 3OH- -> CH3COO- + 2Ag(down) + 4NH3 + 2H2O
