Primary structure = the exact order of amino acids in the polypeptide chain, linked by peptide (amide, -CO-NH-) bonds from the C-terminus of one residue to the N-terminus of the next.

Proteins are polymers of amino acids. In the primary structure, amino acids are covalently connected end-to-end through peptide bonds, formed by the condensation of the -COOH group of one amino acid with the -NH2 group of the next (with loss of a water molecule). This linear sequence — which amino acid occupies which position, from the N-terminal end to the C-terminal end — is entirely genetically determined and is unique to each protein.
