Enzymes are biological catalysts (mostly globular proteins) whose activity is defined by specificity, catalytic efficiency, and sensitivity to reaction conditions.

  1. Specificity of action: each enzyme catalyses only one particular reaction, or a set of closely related reactions, on a specific substrate (or class of substrates), because the substrate must fit precisely into the enzyme's active site (like a lock-and-key or induced-fit mechanism). For example, urease acts only on urea and no other amide.

  2. Catalytic efficiency (rate enhancement): enzymes increase the rate of biochemical reactions by many orders of magnitude (often 10^6 to 10^12 times faster than the uncatalysed reaction) by lowering the activation energy of the reaction, and they themselves remain chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction — they are true catalysts, not consumed in the process.
