Unlike an ordinary battery that stores a fixed amount of reactant internally, a fuel cell is continuously fed fuel and oxidant from outside, so it can generate electricity as long as the supply lasts, with high efficiency and minimal pollution.

Construction: the most common example is the hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell. It consists of two porous electrodes (usually made of carbon, coated with a catalyst such as finely divided platinum or palladium), immersed in an aqueous electrolyte such as concentrated NaOH or KOH solution. Hydrogen gas is bubbled continuously over the anode, and oxygen gas is bubbled continuously over the cathode.

Reactions:

At anode (oxidation): 2H2(g) + 4OH-(aq) → 4H2O(l) + 4e-

At cathode (reduction): O2(g) + 2H2O(l) + 4e- → 4OH-(aq)

Overall cell reaction: 2H2(g) + O2(g) → 2H2O(l)

The overall reaction is the same as the simple combustion of hydrogen, but instead of releasing the energy as heat, the fuel cell converts the chemical energy directly and efficiently into electrical energy (efficiency of about 70%, much higher than a heat engine).
